In order to prevent further mutterings along the lines of “one person’s gimmee is another person’s 7-iron”, JohnS has very kindly measured his putter shaft length up to the base of the grip, which he had trimmed into a straight line round the shaft to ensure an accurate scientific basis for the measurement.
So I can now tell you that the BB Standard Long Gimmee Distance is 64.5cm (or for the Brexiteers amongst you 25.375 inches).
I have taken my putter grip as the standard for the BB Standard Short Gimmee Distance and that measures 26.5cm (or 10.4375 inches).
Should you so desire you can now apply appropriate markings to your putter.
We have decided not to put John’s putter into a hermetically sealed, temperature controlled case in the basement of the Science Museum, so we might observe very slight differences due to the unusual Coefficient of Expansion of his putter shaft which dates from the time before alloys and carbon fibre were invented.
