I am writing this 6 days after the event with the result that I can remember very little except that the weather was very pleasant for golf and my partners, Alan and JohnT, and I had a very pleasant round.
I also remember that when it came to the declaration of the results, there was some disagreement between the two pairs following us, PeterR & Bill and Nick & PeterF, as to how many holes PeterF had played before retiring injured with a back injury. I decided, Solomon-like, that given that each pair had probably won one nine holes or the other and that their scores were very close, sharing the spoils between them was the best compromise.
It was pointed out to me afterwards that, had we been able to establish precisely on which hole Pete’s back injury had rendered him unable to play any further, that there was a much more complex calculation to be performed which might have given a more accurate result – but since I had to get home quickly to pack before setting off to get an eye test in Barnard Castle, I did n’t have time to get the abacus out so the result stayed as it was.
I see that the resultant Eclectic Table has the Eclectic maestro himself, aka Alan, already in the lead. He often stays in his tent until the last minute before posting a winning score, so this is clearly a new strategy designed to keep us baffled.
