Due to time pressures this is an exceptionally brief report. It may well have been non-existent but for the fact that I must get out of my system all memories of a round in which my putting was worse than abysmal.
Putting is such a simple task as evidenced by the performance of any of our grandchildren on any crazy golf course. Why is it then that after decades of practice I can still hit the ball several feet past the hole or several feet wide of the hole???
I could n’t blame the Temple greens, they were nigh-on perfect and running smoothly and quite speedily. My playing partners MikeS and RobA had no problems on them. I think that I contributed a measly 2 points to our team score on the front 9 and not much better on the back 9.
After much enforced chopping and changing we finally arrived at Temple to tee off at 9:16am – a perfect time and the weather started cool and then warmed up to ridiculous Autumn levels without any of the heavy rain which had been forecast 2 days before.
The balls fell so that MikeS, RobA and myself were partnered and MikeW, Bill and Stuart formed the other 3-ball for an Autumn League match plus a team game based on best 2 out of 3 scores on every hole.
MikeS in particular played very steady golf and Rob was not far behind – his 6-iron was working miracles. This was lucky for me as they accrued a respectable score between them.
MikeS, RobA and Richard: 36 + 37 = 73
Bill, MikeW and Stuart: 23 + 36 = 59
The Autumn League scores were:
MikeS (35), RobA (30), MikeW & Stuart (28), Richard (26) and Bill (24 (7+17))
Bill is off with his sons to have a crack at Royal Liverpool tomorrow so let’s hope his 17points on the back 9 is a positive augury and the wind and rain keep away for them.
