From our correspondent (and game organiser):
“Sunningdale Hosted the Ballbashers Summer Jug
On arrival, we were warmly met by Gill and her team. The best bacon baps in the world were wheeled out. PF on requesting brown sauce was, correctly in my opinion, chastised by the chef pointing out the homemade chutney was far superior.
Lots were drawn for the teams to play Better Ball Stableford with best 2 out of 3 to count:
- Bill, Pete, Mike W
- Mike S, Nick, Ash
- Stuart, Alan, Rob
The sun was out, the course and greens in near perfect condition, What could possibly go wrong !!!! The first group with an audience teed off, MW went way right very close to someone’s garden, Bill didn’t carry the road and nobody watched Pete’s ball. Hey Ho!, that’s Ballbasher golf !!!
In our group, Nick hit form on the back nine finishing with 40 points, Mike had flashes of brilliance and I was steady Eddie. No lost balls…
The chat in the Clubhouse was what a great course, how fantastic the staff is, and how easy it is to lose balls on such a short course!!!!
The Result and prizes 3 Bottles Louis Jadot Burgundy (Delicious):
- Mike S, Nick and Ash 85
- Bill, Pete and Mike W 73
- Stuart, Alan, Rob 71
We will return.”
And a bonus report from another winning team member (well they would would n’t they?):
“A day out at Sunningdale Heath…
It’s not often that you play on a course looking “picture perfect” but this was the case with Sunningdale Heath where, once the initial clouds cleared, nine Ballbashers relished the blue skies, verdant fairways, and well-groomed greens on offer for this year’s Summer Jug.
Is this the perfect Ballbasher course? It’s short… only 3,700 yards, so not too much pressure on knees, hips & backs. It’s cleverly designed – go too far left or right and you’re in trouble – and its combination of encouragingly reachable and challengingly long holes provides constant interest. But, above all, on a sunny August day with its purple heather in bloom it’s absolutely beautiful.
I arrived late due to unexpected roadworks dotted around the Sunningdale approaches, which meant I missed out on the legendary pre-match bacon butties but found that they’d clearly lived up to expectations and that the teams had been drawn, with Mike W, Bill & Pete F playing Stuart, Alan & Rob and Ashley, Mike S & me, and with the best two Stableford scores to count. Interesting combinations…
Unfortunately, I’ve little information about what happened in the other teams but in ours I’m pleased to report that Mike S and Ashley played solid and often impressive golf to keep the points clocking up while Player A – who appeared on the 3rd and, sensing that such perfect golfing conditions are a rare blessing, kindly hung around until the 18th – turned in an exemplary performance. As a result we achieved Mike S’ target of 85 points, with 40 points on the front 9 and 45 on the back 9.
Admiring the views from outside the clubhouse while savouring drinks and post-match snacks served by Sunningdale Heath’s always friendly & efficient staff we were surprised to find that our tally was in fact more than sufficient to secure the Jug and three excellent bottles of wine.
Another successful day out and many thanks to Ashley for all his work in organising it.”
