A report from our correspondent:
“The problems started before the golf did. We found Park Road was closed off and we separately different routes through various strange parts of Slough to the South Parks course. We grabbed drinks and cards after finding that the full 18 holes were open until they knew not when.
I think the weather had affected attendance as the course seemed fairly empty, so we tossed balls and it was the two Mikes v Rob and myself. It was then that we got the first inkling of Mike S’s plan. He promptly sliced his ball into the rough and we went on a forlorn hunt for the ball. Two other golfers appeared on the tee and we waved them through. Whilst waiting for them we then found Mike’s ball and we proceeded.
So this was his plan. Wild drive off the tee, then miraculous recovery shot, followed by outrageous putt. This was best exemplified by the 7th hole. He smashed his drive far too far into the rhododendrons beyond the fairway. Taking advantage of the single stroke water hazard rule, he took a drop and played his third to the centre of the green. He then of course he sunk the putt.
The rest of us proceeded in a modest fashion with occasional threes and for Rob and Mike W creditable fours.
However Mike S with his swashbuckling drives got 4 threes on the first 9 which gave the Mikes’s the lead 18 to 13 at the turn. The play continued in a similar fashion on the back 9. On the 18th Mike smashed his drive way left where it bobbled about in some horrible looking stuff. By the time we appeared on the green from our various directions Mike S was on the green miles from the pin for 3. Then of course…
The denouement was that Mike S had scored a further 4 threes making 8 in total. The Mike’s won the match by 34 to 19. So much for steady golf. “
